Nick Saban’s 9 keys to leadership

Nick Saban is one of the most dominant head coaches in all of college football. During his time with the LSU Tigers, Saban was able to win one national championship. After taking over the Alabama Crimson Tide, Saban added another three national titles to his resume.

Add in five SEC championships and one MAC title at Toledo and you can see why players flock to play for a Saban coached team.

But what makes the 63 year old so successful?

In a new book, by Monte Burke titled, Saban: The Making of a Coach, we get an inside look at why Saban has been able to blossom into one of the best leaders in the sport.

The secret? It all comes down to nine keys to leadership.

Burke outlined the nine keys to success in an article published on Tuesday morning. They are as follows:

  • Adapt and Adjust
  • Stick to Your Guns
  • Dress for Success
  • Take Control of Your Job Interviews
  • Stay Focused
  • Be Relentless—and Prepared—While Recruiting Talent
  • Surround Yourself With the Right People
  • Use Your Leverage
  • Get the Details Right

You can read a full breakdown here.

It isn’t always the easiest thing to put all of those plans in motion, but when you do it is easy to see why the success would come.

No one has been able to adapt and adjust from job to job quite like Nick Saban. He is always focused and his players will follow. Near the bottom of the bullet point list, you see some points that have really been highlighted in recent years.

With the help of Saban’s agent Jimmy Sexton, the coach was able to get more money by surrounding himself with the right agent and using the leverage at Texas to increase his pay.

It’s all worked out for Saban over the years and the book outlines why.

Since joining Alabama, Saban has never gone more than two consecutive years without raising a national championship trophy. If everything falls into place this season, that streak could stay intact.

Alabama’s 2015 campaign kicks off on Saturday, Sept. 5 at AT&T Stadium against the Wisconsin Badgers.
