Big Ten football, Week 5: Ranking the 5 best teams

This past week in college football there were plenty of shake ups, but the Big Ten remained fairly strong. It was a very entertaining and exciting week for any diehard football fan and Week 5 is coming up and boasts quite a bit of entertainment in its own right.

While there were multiple upsets throughout Week 4, there were also teams that solidified their spot at the top of the college football world. Other teams broke into the top rankings and are going to be teams to keep an eye on this week. There are a few of those teams in these rankings and you probably have a good idea of a few of them.

Heading into this week, the Big Ten conference is one of the strongest in the nation with numerous contenders for the College Football Playoff contenders.

All of that being said, it is always fun to rank the individual conferences each and every week. Let’s take a look at who the top five teams in the Big Ten are heading into Week 5.

5. Michigan Wolverines, 3-1 (0-0)

Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines opened some eyes this past week with a huge win over the No. 22 ranked BYU Cougars. They were looking too make a statement and that was exactly what they were able to do.

Following the upset, Harbaugh’s team is trending in the right direction and it could only be a matter of time until they find themselves further up the list.

4. Northwestern Wildcats, 4-0 (0-0)

Despite the fact that the Northwestern Wildcats are ranked No. 16 in the nation and are higher than the Wisconsin Badgers, they simply cannot jump up to the third spot in these rankings.

Northwestern has played a perfect season from a winning and losing standpoint, but they haven’t played a perfect season on the field.

There are still a number of question marks, but there is no doubting the talent that they put on the field each and every week.

3. Wisconsin Badgers, 3-1 (0-0)

The only loss that the Wisconsin Badgers have this season was against an incredibly talented Alabama Crimson Tide football team.

Wisconsin has bounced back well and is showing that they are truly one of the powerhouse teams in the Big Ten.

Some would have them behind Northwestern simply because of their record, but the No. 19 Badgers have proven with consistency over time that they are a force to be reckoned with.

2. Ohio State Buckeyes, 4-0 (0-0)

Some would also disagree with the Ohio State Buckeyes being ranked No. 2 in the Big Ten despite being ranked the No. 1 team in the country. That being said, the struggles that they have shown at times this season have landed them in this position.

Ohio State is definitely a championship contender once again this year, but they have some flaws that must be fixed in order to beat the top team in these rankings.

1. Michigan State Spartans, 4-0 (0-0)

Connor Cook and the Michigan State Spartans get this spot in the rankings because of the big statement win that they had against the Oregon Ducks.

They have gone up against tougher competition than Ohio State and have come out with the same record.

Michigan State also hasn’t struggled against competition that they should dominate like the Buckeyes have, so they get the edge.
