North Dakota selects ‘Fighting Hawks’ as new mascot name

One of the most anticipated mascot competition has finally been decided as the University of North Dakota has picked their new mascot name going forward. The name was selected and announced Wednesday morning after a six-month long selection process.

The school announced that their new nickname is the Fighting Hawks after their final run-off vote occurred on Tuesday afternoon.

North Dakota was at one point called the Fighting Sioux, a name they had used since 1999, but were forced to change it amidst racial tensions in 2012. They have since gone by their school name with no mascot.

Fighting Hawks was selected out of more than 11,000 name options. It beat out Roughriders in the final vote. The school announced that they would continue to use the interlocking symbol until a new one for their mascot name is created.
