As the Oklahoma Sooners prepare to face off against the Clemson Tigers in their first game of the College Football Playoffs, they are most focused on shutting down Deshaun Watson. They reportedly see some similarities between Watson and TCU Horned Frogs quarterback Trevone Boykin.
Oklahoma linebacker Dominique Alexander talked about the comparison that he sees and why he feels ready to face Watson.
“We didn’t face [Boykin] this year,” Alexander said, “but the guys we have on our defense, we all played [last year]. So we’ve seen [a quarterback] like that.”
Defensive coordinator Mike Stoops added a comparison to Sooners’ quarterback Baker Mayfield into the mix.
“He has a lot of Baker in him,” defensive coordinator Mike Stoops said. “We’ve got to make sure whatever we’re doing, we can account for him.”
Watson may be similar to those quarterbacks, but he has other tricks up his sleeve. Clemson has one of the best all-around teams in the nation and Dabo Swinney has to feel very confident about his teams chances. Oklahoma is a very worthy contender, but stopping Watson is not going to be easy at all.
They may have seen a quarterback “like him” but they have not faced him. That will be a difference and it’ll be interesting to see what kind of numbers Watson puts up against the Sooners.
Oklahoma will kick off against Clemson on December 31st at 4:00 p.m. ET and you can watch the game on ESPN.
