2016 Jimmy V Classic matchups announced

The four teams participating in the 2016 Jimmy V Classic at New York’s Madison Square Garden will be Purdue, Arizona State, Duke and Florida, according to a release from ESPN.

The annual doubleheader honors former North Carolina State head coach Jim Valvano, who passed away from cancer at just 47 years old in 1993. The 2016 event will take place on December 6, with Purdue and Arizona State facing off at 7 p.m. ET and Duke and Florida set to tip off at 9 p.m. ET, with ESPN broadcasting both games.

Needless to say, some fine teams were selected for participation in 2016. Purdue is coming off a trip to the NCAA Tournament and has a great young big man in rising sophomore Caleb Swanigan, while Arizona State will continue its transformation into a fast and aggressive squad under former Duke star Bobby Hurley. These two teams last met in Las Vegas in 2002, and Purdue leads the short series between both teams, 3-2.

The same can be said about Florida and Duke, with the Blue Devils just a season removed from a national championship. Florida only made the NIT last year, but the fact remains that all four teams have seven national championships between them.

Throw in all the talent on each team, and there’s no doubt that the 2016 Jimmy V Classic should be incredibly fun to watch.
