Former Baylor star Rico Gathers defends alma mater amidst scandal

It has been a whirlwind for Baylor University amidst a sexual assault scandal that has cost many at the university their jobs, but there is still some support. Former Bears basketball star Rico Gathers, who is now with the Dallas Cowboys as a tight end, defended his alma mater on Wednesday afternoon.

Gathers decided to leave school and try his hand at the NFL and was drafted by the Cowboys in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He spoke with The Dallas Morning News and reiterated that he was proud to be a graduate of Baylor.

I’m glad to say I graduated from Baylor University,” Gathers said.

Gathers, who was going to play football for the Bears this fall before declaring for the NFL Draft, went on to comment about the school itself and called Baylor “a good place.”

“It’s been real difficult,” Gathers said of the school’s recent sexual assault scandal. “Baylor is a good place, man. Certain events are really shining down on it right now. But I’m glad to say I graduated from Baylor.

“Baylor has been real good to me, real good to my family and for the most part, I enjoyed my four years there.”

Rico Gathers is a pretty big name around the city of Waco and if he is able to maintain his pride in the school, shouldn’t everyone else feel the same? While that may be the best way to think about this, it is nothing more than a pipe dream at this point.
