Japanese gymnast racks up $5,000 in charges playing ‘Pokemon Go’

“Pokemon Go” is the hottest trending topic in the world today and it shouldn’t come as a surprise that many of the Olympic athletes want to play the game.

However, Japanese gymnast Kuhei Uchimara might not want to open the app on his phone for a little while.

Late Tuesday night, it was reported that Uchimara, a six-time world champion and the reigning gold medalist in the men’s all-around competition, had racked up 500,000 yen ($4,954) in roaming charges.

This was all because he wanted to play the game and it already sucks up a ton of data.

“He looked dead at the team meal that day,” teammate Kenzo Shirai said, according to Kyodo news agency.

The worst thing about Uchimara’s spending was that “Pokemon Go” hasn’t even been released in Brazil yet, so his attempts to catch ’em all were all for naught. Luckily, his phone company agreed to reduce his bill to a $30 a day, all you can use data plan.

The Japanese superstar is looking to bring home another gold medal to his home country. He won’t, however, be bringing home a couple extra Pikachus.
