A rough start to the 2016 college football season continues for the Tennessee Volunteers. In the first quarter on Thursday night, star linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin was ejected after hitting Appalachian State’s Jaquil Capel and being called for targeting.
Capel did not appear to call for a fair catch, but Reeves-Maybin lowered his head and made helmet-to-helmet contact with Capel, earning a flag for kick catch interference and the disqualification.
Here is the hit:
Tennessee currently trails Appalachian State, thanks to another miscue earlier in the corner on special teams. Tennessee’s Cameron Sutton muffed a punt which led to a five-yard touchdown run for Mountaineers running back Taylor Lamb.
The Vols answered with a field goal to bring the score to 7-3.
There is still plenty of football left to play, but the Vols are struggling to find their rhythm on offense and they must now move forward without the heart and soul of their defense.
It’s not going to be as easy as many would have thought.
