South Alabama tops Sun Belt Players of the Week

The South Alabama Jaguars knocked off the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Saturday in a shocking upset. Because of that big win, they have been honored by having two players named as offensive and defensive players of the week in the Sun Belt conference.

Quarterback Dallas Davis accounted for 308 yards of total offense with two touchdowns in the team’s 21-20 win over the Bulldogs, the program’s first win over an SEC team. He led three second-half touchdown drives that pulled them back from being down 17-0 at the half.

As for the defensive player of the week, Davis’s teammate, linebacker Roman Buchanan was given that honor after his huge impact for the Jaguars. He recorded a career-high 12 tackles and held the Bulldogs 177 yards and just three points in the second half.

This helped the Jaguars overcome their big deficit after being shutout in the first half. This will certainly give them confidence going into this weekend’s game against the Georgia Southern Eagles.

Texas State kicker Marcus Ripley was named special teams player of the week after he kicked two field goals in a 56-54 triple overtime win over the Ohio Bobcats. One of those field goals tied the game and took it to overtime while the second helped them get to a third overtime.
