Patriots prepping Julian Edelman for backup QB role

New England Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo went down with a shoulder injury in Sunday’s win over the Miami Dolphins, forcing them to go with third-string rookie quarterback Jacoby Brissett. Now it seems Brissett, the only healthy quarterback on the roster, will get the start on Thursday against the Houston Texans.

After Garoppolo’s injury, fans took to Twitter and joked about how they should have wide receiver Julian Edelman ready to play. Now it looks like the Patriots are actually taking the fans’ advice and prepping the do it all guy for a backup quarterback role.

Edelman actually played quarterback for Kent State from 2006-2008 and he racked up almost 5,000 yards and 30 touchdowns. He threw a 51-yard touchdown during the 2014 playoffs.

It will certainly be interesting to see if the Patriots actually put Edelman behind center for them this weekend. The Patriots and Texans meet up on Thursday at 8:25 p.m. on CBS and NFL Network and streaming live on Twitter.
