Cam Newton ruled out vs. Buccaneers with concussion

Cam Newton will not play against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night.

Newton, who sustained a concussion in the Carolina Panthers’ Week 4 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, has been in concussion protocol all week. He has not practiced leading into the weekend.

In his absence, veteran quarterback Derek Anderson will take control of the offense. He hopes to repeat his success against the Buccaneers. He defeated them twice in 2014 filling in for an injured Cam Newton.

The Panthers have not gotten off to the start they hoped, sitting at 1-3 after being crowned NFC Champions last season. Their only victory came against the lowly 49ers in week 2.

Newton’s injury, while the most notable, is one of many for the Panthers this week. They will be without left tackle Michael Oher and running back Jonathan Stewart on offense, and without defensive tackle Vernon Butler and cornerback James Bradberry on the other side of the ball.

If the Panthers hope to turn their season around, they’ll have to do so without their most explosive player. Falling to 1-4 on the season will make it very difficult to win 10 games this year and make the playoffs.
