Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg calls anthem protests ‘really dumb’

In an interview with Yahoo News, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader called the protests taking place in the world of sports “dumb and disrespectful”.

During the interview, in which Couric and Justice Bader discussed several topics, Bader had strong words to say on the subject of anthem protests that have become a feature during sporting events across the country. The protests, which were started by Colin Kaepernick during the preseason, have drawn much criticism; both positive and negative. Justice Bader’s was mostly negative.

Couric asked: “But when it comes to these football players, you may find their actions offensive, but what you’re saying is, it’s within their rights to exercise those actions?”

“Yes,” Ginsberg replied. “If they want to be stupid, there’s no law that should be preventive. If they want to be arrogant, there’s no law that prevents them from that. What I would do is strongly take issue with the point of view that they are expressing when they do that.”

No mincing words there.

The issue of anthem protests is drawing a lot of mixed reviews. With many players joining in the practice, the ECU marching band was recently booed off the field for joining in. Athletic directors have released statements both in support and in admonishment.

Kaepernick has held that he will continue to kneel indefinitely.
