ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit believes the Clemson Tigers are the best team in the nation, despite being ranked third in the country behind Alabama and Michigan.
Herbstreit made his claim during Saturday’s edition of ESPN College GameDay live, which is broadcasting live from Baton Rouge ahead of Saturday night’s meeting between No. 1 Alabama and No. 13 LSU.
Clemson is undefeated this season and has won a few close games over quality opponents already this season. They are the only team to put the brakes on the Lamar Jackson extravaganza and beat Louisville Cardinals and they outlasted Florida State last week. They have also played down to their opponent on occasion, beating Troy by only six and NC State by only a touchdown.
Alabama, meanwhile, have run over anybody who they’ve line up against. With the exception of Ole Miss, who they beat by five points, Saban’s Crimson Tide has been totally unstoppable.
Clemson has a rushing quarterback in DeShaun Watson. Mobile quarterbacks have always been the Achilles of Saban coached defenses though we might have to wait until the national championship to see if that holds true.
Both of those teams should earn bids to the College Football playoff, with Michigan potentially locking up a spot as well. The final spot is up for grabs, with Louisville and Ohio State both stating their cases. Michigan and Ohio State play at the end of the season.
