On Saturday night, Bellator MMA went head-to-head with the UFC, holding Bellator 165 at the SAP Center in San Jose, Calif. While Michael Chandler retained his lightweight title in an instant classic, it was Keri Anne Taylor-Melendez who really stole the show.
Melendez, the wife of former Strikeforce champion and UFC title contender Gilbert Melendez, didn’t need long to make an impact in her mixed martial arts debut, using her impressive striking credentials to earn a devastating knockout win over Sheila Padilla in just 47 seconds.
The win immediately catapults Melendez into the spotlight in the Bellator women’s division and her slick striking will be trouble for anyone she faces.
It will be interesting to see how Melendez continues to develop as she continues her transition from Muay Thai and kickboxing to a well-round mixed martial arts game.
