Tom Herman took over a job at Texas that will subject him to the most intense scrutiny of his life. The coach, who rose to prominence while coaching the Houston Cougars to unprecedented success, will need to win immediately to avoid the wrath of the Longhorns fanbase.
As we learned from the previous coaching regime in Texas, the support of the fans and boosters is integral to the success of the program.
Herman has already received the support that former coach Charlie Strong was never able to get. Before Strong ever made a single call as the head coach of the Texas Longhorns, super-booster Red McCombs had already said the hiring was curious, and that Strong would have been better suited with a lesser position:
“I think the whole thing is a bit sideways. I don’t have any doubt that Charlie is a fine coach. I think he would make a great position coach, maybe a coordinator,” McCombs stated.
McCombs would later apologize for the comments, but the damage had already been done. The comments would underscore Charlie Strong’s difficulty to lead Texas to a .500 record under his watch. Either Red McCombs has learned not to repeat his past mistakes and is playing nice, or he is a big fan of Texas’ new head football coach.
“I know Tom by reputation, and spoke to him this morning. This guy is the real deal,” McCombs said, via Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesman.
“If you list his 10 greatest qualities, coaching might be No. 7 or 8. His greatest is recognizing talent. The second one is recognizing the enemy and what it takes to beat him. There are some guys out there we know are winners because we’ve played them and gotten our ass beat the last two years.”
With the support of McCombs and the fanbase thrilled with the hiring of Herman, things have played out as well as possible so far. All that is left to do for Herman is win football games.
