Cal recruit’s mother dies on National Signing Day

Cal football recruit Poutasi Poutasi had an emotional National Signing Day.

On the same day that Poutasi signed his National Letter of Intent to play for the Golden Bears, he learned that his mother, Vaelua Poutasi, had passed away.

“This is supposed to be the best day of my life but it turned out to be the saddest,” Poutasi wrote on Twitter. “No matter the outcome you’ll always be my rock! I love you mommy! I really hope you’re proud of me. I know you wanted to see me play football and all but I would give this all up to see you smile and talk again.

“Mom I know I could’ve been a better son but I hope you are proud of me and Tali! I love you Mommy.”

Poutasi’s mother passed away from diabetes.

He later posted another message to his mother, promising to make her proud.

Our deepest condolences go out to Poutasi and his family. This is a guy you can easily root for, and we can all only wish him the best in his career.
