Auburn Football: John Franklin III Could Move From QB To WR

John Franklin III is likely near the bottom of the depth chart as the Auburn quarterback entering the 2017.

As a result, the 6-foot-1, 186 pound quarterback has been lining up at wide receiver quite a bit in spring practices to try and get on the field more.

Coach Gus Malzahn praised Franklin III’s work ethic, but appeared rather candid about his prospects at getting some playing time:

“He worked with the quarterbacks. He also got some reps at some receiver, too. He’s got a skill set. Obviously everybody knows he’s a great athlete, but it’s kind of really hard to tell. He hasn’t got much but we’ll give him an opportunity, and his attitude is great. He’s wanting to help the team any way he can.”

Franklin III was originally committed to Florida State before transferring to East Mississippi Community College and starring on the Netflix Original Series “Last Chance U.” He sat behind Wyatt Roberts for the entirety of the season, never winning an opportunity to be the starter of a game.

In limited time at quarterback for the Tigers, he has been most effective running the ball, tallying 450 on 46 carries.

With athleticism, speed and quickness, Franklin III has all the tools to be a star. It appears he is also being given every opportunity, and it will interesting to see how he progress through spring practice.
