Frank Martin is suddenly getting more press and publicity than any other coach in the history of South Carolina Basketball? Why? Because he’s had more success than any of his predecessors by leaps and bounds.
And to whom does he owe that success? His mother, who else?
While speaking at his press conference a reporter in the room asked Martin to speak about the interaction that he had with his mother after the Gamecocks advanced to the Final Four.
Martin’s ensuing response was everything a mother has ever wanted her kid to say:
Martin came to the Gamecocks after leading the Kansas State Wildcats to three consecutive tournament appearances.
Inheriting a team that had won only 10 games the previous season, Martin coached the team to continuous improvement before finishing 25-9 in the 2015-16 season, and making it to the Final Four this year for the first time in South Carolina school history.
With an obvious penchant for success, it appears that all of the sacrifice that Martin talks about his mother making throughout the course of his life was not wasted. Win or lose against Gonzaga on Saturday, coach Martin has exceeded expectations by leaps and bounds this season, and the future looks bright.
