Bo Pelini, Brent Venables in line for LSU DC job?

LSU has some big names on the radar as it continues its search for a defensive coordinator, with a report from NOLA.com suggesting that former Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini and Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables could both be strong candidates to head to Baton Rouge.

The report offered further details:

Brent Venables

Venables, Clemson’s defensive coordinator, also was in the running to replace Chavis at LSU. He has a proven track record, but has been hard to move off of his perch at Clemson, where he has been for four seasons after being defensive coordinator at Oklahoma. Venables’ limited ties to Les Miles’ staff might work against him.

Bo Pelini

He has a history in Baton Rouge, serving as Les Miles’ first defensive coordinator at LSU from 2005-07 before leaving to become Nebraska’s head coach. There is some concern about Pelini’s sometimes volatile personality and whether it would mesh with members of LSU’s staff, but he has his share of supporters involved in the vetting process. He’s currently head coach at Youngstown State after being fired by the Cornhuskers.

LSU has lost its second defensive coordinator in as many years, with John Chavis having left for Texas A&M last season and Kevin Steele headed to Auburn after this year. Pelini’s ties to LSU could help him but on top of his volatile personality, he has head coaching experience and may just see the Tigers as a pit stop until he gets another job.

Venables, however has no strong ties to the program nor the SEC, but has turned Clemson’s defense into one that can compete for a national championship, so he could be hard to say no to when it comes to offering the job.
