Creighton AD wants Wichita State and Gonzaga in the Big East

Creighton athletic director Bruce Rasmussen hopes the Big East Conference expands from 10 to 12 teams and would make a case for Wichita State and Gonzaga as a future member, according to Bob Lutz of Kansas.com.

“As a part of the strategic planning exercise the Big East Conference is currently undertaking, the topic of expansion is an agenda item,” Rasmussen said. “While I do not sense a great appetite currently by Big East presidents for expansion, I personally would be an advocate for adding Gonzaga and Wichita State.”

If Rasmussen gets his wish, it would mark an even greater shift from what the conference once was, with only four of the original members included in the conference. Currently there are ten teams in the conference, down from its peak of 16 teams at one point.

Currently Butler, Creighton, DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John’s, Seton Hall, Villanova and Xavier are currently in the conference. Wichita State would be the only public university in the conference if they switched. Gonzaga is a private, Roman Catholic university.

If those two schools make the move, maybe they should thinking about changing the name of the conference. Gonzaga, in Spokane, Wash. is nowhere near the east coast. Although it is in eastern Washington, maybe that counts.
