Derrick Thomas’s son, Donnell Alexander, gets tryout with Chiefs

Former linebacker Derrick Thomas is one of the greatest players in Kansas City Chiefs history and it looks like his legacy could be carried on. His son, former Colorado State and Akron running back Donnell Alexander, has landed a tryout with the team.

The team reported that Alexander was on the field with the team over the weekend and he seemed to impress the coaches there. He spoke with the team about how he hosted a camp in Colorado during his time with the Rams and said that many fans came up to talk to him about his legendary father.

“I have memories (of Thomas), but I was quite young [when he played], so a lot of the memories mostly come from film,” he said. “When I was in Colorado, I did a camp, and a lot of people came up and spoke to me, and just the way they said that they idolize my father, to me that was amazing because they have no idea really who he is, but for them to just be die-hard fans like that, that shows me a lot.”

Donnell Alexander is originally from Kansas City, standing out at Grandview High School. He rushed for 7,000 yards and 95 touchdowns, which landed him a scholarship at Colorado State, where he redshirted in 2011 and played for three seasons before transferring to Akron for his senior year.

He rushed for 1,509 yards and nine touchdowns across the span of three seasons at the collegiate level. He might not be the legend his father was, but he will certainly be welcomed in by the many fans in his hometown.
