Duke freshman Derryck Thornton to transfer

The Duke Blue Devils are looking to be one of the best teams in the country for the 2016-17 season. However, it was just announced that they would be losing a promising player in Derryck Thornton very soon.

ESPN’s Jeff Goodman reported that Thornton will be seeking a transfer in the next few months ahead of the season. This likely has something to do with the talent the team has coming in their recruiting class.

Grayson Allen just announced his return to the school for his junior season and the team will add five-star point guard Frank Jackson, who likely would have been in a battle with Derryck Thornton for the starting job.

Thornton was a five-star guard coming out of California and saw his playing time diminish in ACC play, despite being the only true point guard on the team. Sources also stated that he could move closer to his home state to continue his career.

During the 2015-16 season, Thornton averaged 7.1 points and 2.6 assists per game. He will likely have to sit out the 2016-17 season due to NCAA transfer rules.
