Duke HR investigating women’s basketball team

Duke University’s human resources department is investigating the women’s basketball team over allegations of player mistreatment under Joanne P. McCallie, according to Swish Appeal.

Per what sources told the site, the investigation is as a result of two players in Azurá Stevens and Angela Salvadores leaving the program following the 2015-16 season.

“The welfare and success of our student-athletes are among Duke’s highest priorities,” Duke said in a statement via the News & Observer. “To that end, we are in the process of conducting an evaluation of the Duke women’s basketball program. This effort is led by a Duke human resources professional outside the athletics department. Coach (JoAnne P.) McCallie is aware of the evaluation and eager to assist. We look forward to hearing the insights of those involved in the program and any recommendations that may result from this evaluation.”

It’s also worth noting that multiple players have left Duke during McCallie’s tenure, not to mention various assistants who have moved on to other assistant jobs for similar pay as opposed to better, all allegedly because of how they were treated. Duke is interviewing everyone from former players to former staffers, so this should all be uncovered soon.

Either way, player mistreatment is no joke and has ruined careers in the past. Former Rutgers coach Mike Rice was fired for that very reason in 2013 and has not been able to find work since, and the same can be said for former Illinois coach Tim Beckman, who was fired last year.
