ESPN to air ’30 for 30′ for Ric Flair

Professional wrestler Ric Flair is one of the most recognizable and best entertainers to ever compete in the squared circle. He holds the record for for most World Title reigns with a career total of 16 and ESPN is honoring him by airing a future “30 for 30” special.

The critically-acclaimed documentary series, which has aired shows like “I Hate Christian Laettner” and “The Book of Manning,” will air this special later on this year. This episode will be directed by Roy Karpf, who seems very excited about the chance to work with Flair and in a sport he loves.

“In the wrestling world, the viewer isn’t sure what’s real or what isn’t, but ‘Nature Boy’–Ric Flair wasn’t just a character,” said Karpf in an interview this week. “He was real. The wrestler he portrayed in the ring was also the man he was outside the ring. I found that to be fascinating. He’s led a crazy life that’s a natural for a 30 for 30. Plus I just love pro wrestling.”

The special is slated to run about 90 or 120 minutes and will feature Flair himself, his three children, including Ashley, who wrestles with WWE under the name Charlotte and is the current WWE Women’s Champion, Four Horsemen counterparts Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard, and Shawn Michaels, the man who ended his career at Wrestlemania XXIV in 2008.

This will be the third “30 for 30” special ESPN has aired on WWE, joining the special last year on WWE’s developmental brand NXT and the failed pro football company XFL, which airs later this year as well.
