Ex-Army All-American P Tommy Townsend transferring from Tennessee

During the 2015 season, Tennessee punter Tommy Townsend did not see much action because Trevor Daniel proved to be one of the best punters in the SEC. This had led to the rising sophomore seeking a transfer from Knoxville for the upcoming season.

247Sports first reported that Townsend was asking for a release from his scholarship to look elsewhere. The site wrote that he is “looking for a school that might give him an opportunity to play sooner.”

Townsend was a three-star member of the Volunteers’ 2015 recruiting class and participated in the 2015 Army All-American Game before arriving at Tennessee. However, his being stuck behind the record-setting Daniel was probably the biggest reason from him leaving Knoxville.

Last year, Daniel, a walk-on, set a school record by averaging 45.7 yards per punt. He also still has two years of eligibility left to play with the Volunteers.

Now that Tommy Townsend is transferring, he will likely have to sit out the 2016 season, if he stays at the FBS level. If he does, he will have three years of eligibility left starting with the 2017 season.
