Ex-Nebraska star Lawrence Phillips found dead in jail cell

On Wednesday, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation released a statement announcing the death of former Nebraska Cornhuskers star Lawrence Phillips, who was found in his jail cell at the age of 40.

The death is being investigated as a suspected suicide.

Phillips was serving a 31-year sentence  for inflicting great bodily injury involving domestic violence, corporal injury to a spouse, false imprisonment and vehicle theft. He was also suspected in the murder of his former cellmate — which he was facing the death penalty for.

After starring at the University of Nebraska and being a part of the 1994 and 1995 championship teams, Phillips became the No. 6 overall pick of the 1996 NFL draft. Phillips also played for the Miami Dolphins and San Francisco 49ers.
