Former Aggies LB fires back at Kyle Allen’s criticism of program

Former Texas A&M quarterback Kyle Allen had some choice words for what he described as the “culture” of the football program in College Station, and another former Aggie has fired right back in response.

That former Aggie is linebacker Sean Porter, who played for Texas A&M from 2009-2012 and took to Twitter to respond to Allen’s claims that the players had an “I can do whatever the hell I want and win on Saturday” attitude that was accentuated by the Johnny Manziel era.

Now, Porter is a proud Aggie and will defend the program until the day he dies. His attitude is very much “don’t bite the hand that gave you your initial opportunity,” and that’s valid.

Every Division I college football player on any respective team has the same goal of ultimately heading to the NFL one day, so criticizing a program that helps them take their first steps towards that goal could be seen as out of line for some.

But then there’s the fact that Allen, who has since transferred to Houston, makes some valid points.

In the two seasons since Manziel was drafted into the NFL, the Aggies have gotten off to hot starts only to stumble once SEC play began. In 2014, Texas A&M started 5-0 with Kenny Hill at quarterback, only to ultimately bench him after stumbling and then finish 7-5. This past season, Allen led the Aggies to a 5-0 start, only to stumble heavily against Alabama and ultimately get benched in favor of five-star freshman Kyler Murray as Texas A&M finished 8-5.

And here’s the kicker. Murray has also since transferred, to Oklahoma, so Allen is on to something when he describes the unrest in College Station. But by the same token, Porter is right in describing how coach Kevin Sumlin has the tools to build a winning team and it’s just a matter of execution at this point.

Needless to say, 2016 is going to be an interesting season at Kyle Field.
