Hoops world rocked as Iowa, Oregon fall

The college basketball world experienced an earthquake of a serious magnitude this evening as both No. 4 Iowa and No. 11 Oregon were upset by unranked teams.

The Hawkeyes fell to Big Ten rival Indiana in Bloomington, as the Hoosiers balanced team effort won out in an 85-78 victory. Led by guard Yogi Ferrell, who made up for shooting 2 of 12 from the field by sinking all eight of his free throw attempts and finishing with 14 points, Indiana saw five different players finish in double figures and quieted fast and feisty Iowa.

Though Jarrod Uthoff scored 24 points and Adam Woodbury was dominant in the paint with 13 points and 15 rebounds, Iowa’s troubles at the charity stripe is what ultimately damned them. The Hawkeyes shot just 56.5 percent from the foul line as a unit and sank just 13 of 23 attempts. Simply put, free throws are important and not making them can change a game, and that is what happened at Assembly Hall tonight.

Out west, however, a different story was told. Oregon never once held the lead against California and just could not keep up with the Golden Bears at all. Junior Jabari Bird tied a career best with 24 points and point man Sam Singer dished out 11 assists while freshmen Jaylen Brown and Ivan Rabb also had respectable games. Brown chipped in 16 points and Rabb had 13 of his own to go with a team-leading seven rebounds.

Rebounding proved to be the Ducks’ bug-a-boo tonight as Oregon only had 26 boards to Cal’s 39. Oregon’s guards also shot just 28 percent from three-point range and, like Iowa, struggled from the free-throw line and shot just 57.1 percent from the charity stripe.

That all being said, while both teams are due for a drop in the rankings next week, they can cushion the fall so long as Iowa defeats lowly Minnesota and Oregon wins in its visit to Stanford.
