Injuries to keep SDSU’s top punt returner out for 2016

San Diego State’s spring practices have gotten off to a rough start as coach Rocky Long announced that a medical redshirt was being sought for rising senior wide receiver Lloyd Mills.

Per Kirk Kenney of The San Diego Union-Tribune, Mills is battling a number of knee and shoulder issues suffered throughout his football career and will miss the 2016 season because of them. This is a huge blow to the Aztecs, who are losing both their top punt returner and a potential piece of the passing game next year. The good news is that he has already graduated, per Kenney’s report, and could thus take a medical redshirt while remaining on scholarship and pursuing a master’s degree.

“I’m uncomfortable and the trainers are uncomfortable with him being out there,” Long said. “He hurt himself playing football and some other ways, too.”

Originally from the Phoenix area, Mills has returned 33 punts for 348 yards and a score in his Aztecs career while also pulling in 23 receptions for 316 yards and a touchdown.
