Loyola coach Sheryl Swoopes being investigated for player mistreatment

Basketball Hall of Famer and Loyola Chicago women’s basketball coach Sheryl Swoopes is under investigation for possible player mistreatment after a number of mass transfers, according to a report from Loyola student newspaper The Phoenix.

Per the report, an investigation into Swoopes’ treatment of players was launched after 10 of 12 returning scholarship players opted to transfer or requested a release from their scholarships. Loyola lost five players to transfer after the 2014-15 season.

The report also stated that according to a source, Swoopes often “crosses the line” regarding players’ personal lives as well as on the basketball court.

“She really pushes them to the point of misery and to the point where they shut down,” said the source. “A lot of them feel very trapped about who they can talk to in the Athletic Department because regardless of who they choose, it usually gets back to Sheryl … And I think when it gets to that point … there is no outlet.”

Before she got into coaching, Swoopes was one of the pioneers of the WNBA and won four championships playing for the Houston Comets. She was also a three-time WNBA MVP and also played for the Seattle Storm and now-defunct Tulsa Shock.

Which is why news of Sheryl Swoopes’ alleged player mistreatment is shocking. She has been through the collegiate and professional ranks as a player, so one would think that she would treat her own players with the same respect she expected from any and all others.
