Maryland DC Scott Shafer steps down from position

Scott Shafer was fired from his position as Syracuse head coach at the end of the 2015 season and found a job with the Maryland Terrapins just days later. Now it seems like his time with the Terps has come to an end before it even really started.

On Friday, Shafer released a statement saying that he would be leaving his post at the school, citing personal reasons. This came as a shock to the school after he was planning to be a big part of the team’s success going forward.

I want to thank DJ Durkin for the opportunity to be on his staff, but at this time I feel it’s best to step aside to tend to personal matters,” Shafer said in the statement. “I’m sincerely appreciative of his support and friendship.”

Scott Shafer was the head coach with the Orange since the 2013 season and he compiled a 14-23 record before being fired at the end of the 2015 season. Before becoming a head coach, Shafer held defensive coordinator positions with Northern Illinois, Western Michigan, Stanford, Michigan and Syracuse in a career that stretched back to 1991.
