Medical experts unsure about Nick Chubb’s knee for season opener

During the 2015 season, Georgia running back Nick Chubb suffered a near career-ending knee injury against the Tennessee Volunteers which prematurely ended his season.

Chubb has been hard at work trying to rehab, but while many believe he should be ready and 100 percent this season, some doctors believe it could be a longer road to recovery than expected. Veteran SEC analyst Tony Barnhart recently spoke with a Jacksonville radio station about a conversation he had with some doctors, who told him there is reason to believe Chubb could be out for the first few games of the year.

“The orthopedic people that I’ve talked to say from the date you injure the way he injured that knee, it’s a calendar year,” Barnhart told 1010XL in Jacksonville.

“So if he comes back before the end of September, I’m going to be surprised. But if he comes back anywhere close to what he was before, Georgia’s going to develop the quarterback and they’re going to have a pretty good football team.”

New head coach Kirby Smart also seems to have some concern about Chubb, but mostly because he isn’t an expert on injuries of this magnitude.

“I am not a SME (subject matter expert) on knee injuries. So I don’t know if that guy is going to be back or not,” Smart said, via the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “Do I want him to be back? Yes. But it’s hard to say with where he is now whether he’ll be back or not.”

In just five games during last season, Nick Chubb rushed for 942 yards and seven touchdowns, which added to his career total of 2,294 yards and 21 touchdowns.
