Milwaukee transfer Akeem Springs picks Minnesota

The Minnesota Golden Gophers landed a key transfer in the form of Milwaukee Panthers guard Akeem Springs, according NBC Sports.

Springs, a former two-star recruit from the Chicago area, averaged 13.2 points and 5.3 rebounds for Milwaukee last year and shot 49 percent from the field. A potentially toxic situation at Milwaukee could be what led him to seek a transfer for his final season of eligibility, and Minnesota is a program that could really use his presence.

The Gophers went just 8-23 (2-16 Big Ten) last season due to streaky on-court play and lack of overall leadership, so adding a graduate transfer in Springs who has proven he can average double figures in scoring could be just what the doctor ordered. Playing alongside Nate Mason, not to mention fellow transfers Reggie Lynch (Illinois State) and Davonte Fitzgerald (Texas A&M), plus incoming four-star freshman wing Amir Coffey, Springs could definitely be the guy to help Minnesota rebound in 2016-17.
