Mitch Trubisky named starter for UNC opener vs Georgia

The North Carolina Tar Heels had a great season last year as they went 11-1 and fell just short of winning the ACC Championship over Clemson. They are looking to repeat their great year and will do it with Mitch Trubisky at quarterback after Marquise Williams graduated.

The Tar Heels announced Friday morning that Trubisky, who has served as the primary backup for the Tar Heels the last two seasons, will start for the team when they head to Atlanta for their season opener against the Georgia Bulldogs at the Georgia Dome.

I thought Mitch did a good job this spring and didn’t just assume he was going to be the starter. He worked extremely hard and earned it,” head coach Larry Fedora said of his decision. “We always want to have competition at every position. Mitch is the QB with the most experience returning, but he worked hard this spring, competed every day and deserves to be the starter.”

Mitch Trubisky was a member of North Carolina’s 2013 recruiting class. After redshirting his freshman year, he served as the backup for the team starting in 2014.

Over the last two years, he has thrown for 1,014 yards and 11 touchdowns against just four interceptions. Those are pretty good numbers and he at least has Ryan Switzer to help him out in the passing game.

The Tar Heels take on the Bulldogs at the Georgia Dome on September 3.
