Nevada defends hire of former Cal assistant accused of harassment

University of Nevada president Marc Johnson has defended the school hiring former California Golden Bears basketball assistant Yann Hufnagel in releasing a series of text messages and other documentation in support of the decision, according to an AP report.

A total of 21 documents were released at the request of The Reno Gazette-Journal, including a series of texts between Hufnagel and a 24-year-old reporter who accused him of sexual harassment during his time at Cal.

Hufnagel, 33, was actually terminated by the Golden Bears in March following a yearlong investigation into the harassment claim by the reporter, who detailed Hufnagel’s “unwelcome advances” in a long email to Cal head coach Cuonzo Martin.

Despite that, Johnson has no qualms about Wolf Pack coach Eric Musselman hiring Hufnagel and Hufnagel’s lawyer, Mary McNamara agrees with the decision.

“The full record makes it clear beyond doubt that Mr. Hufnagel did not sexually harass the reporter,” McNamara said in an email to the AP. “This is a terrible miscarriage of justice.”

Either way, though Hufnagel has dropped an appeal of his termination at Cal as a result of being hired at Nevada, this situation could be a time bomb waiting to go off. Hopefully, for the sake of Hufnagel and Nevada, everything goes off without a hitch.
