NHL Playoffs 2016: Philadelphia Flyers fans outraged, cause penalty

Philadelphia Flyers fans have developed a bit of a reputation. In typical Philly, passion, Flyers fans have shown themselves to be a bit aggressive. Earlier in the season they chanted, “She said no,” at Blackhawks winger Patrick Kane in the wake of a now dropped rape allegation.

The latest development in Philly aggression comes from their team’s playoff struggle.

The Flyers are on the verge of being swept by the Washington Capitals. They’re down in the series, 3-0, and suffered a thoroughly disheartening 6-1 loss last night, provoking Flyers fans.

During the Flyers pre-game show, which honored the recent death of Flyers founder Ed Snider, fans were given glow in the dark wristbands, which they hurled onto the ice during the third period after Flyers right wing Pierre-Edouard Bellemare was ejected for a hit on Capitals defenseman Dmitry Orlov.

Public address announcer Lou Nolan urged fans to “show some class” during the first wave of band tossing, but the fans disregarded this message. Eventually, the Flyers were charged with a bench minor penalty due to the fan’s game disruption.

Flyers winger Wayne Simmons pleaded with fans from the ice to stop the wristband throwing and later said, “I know they’re upset in that situation but that can’t happen.”

On the other hand, Flyers center Ryan White sympathized with fans, telling CSN-Philadelphia that he would have done the same thing as the fans as he agrees with their frustration regarding the Flyer’s series with the Capitals.

The Flyers will have what could be their last shot at the Stanley Cup Wednesday, when they face Washington for game four at Wells Fargo Center.
