Pete Carroll compares Trevone Boykin to Russell Wilson

Former TCU Horned Frogs quarterback Trevone Boykin was not selected in the 2016 NFL Draft, but he has a chance to crack into the league as an undrafted free agent with the Seattle Seahawks.

According to the early impression Boykin has made on head coach Pete Carroll, he could find plenty of success in the pros.

Carroll spoke of Boykin’s performance as the team opened rookie minicamp this week, and he compared the Big 12 standout to his current Super Bowl winning quarterback, Russell Wilson.

That may seem like a stretch since Boykin has yet to play any meaningful football in the NFL, but we will let Carroll explain.

“His versatility and his style of play is so similar to Russell’s,” Carroll said, via ESPN. “He’s got a big arm. He’s a very creative athlete. He’s got great instincts and great vision. His ability to run and make people miss and get out of trouble is very similar to what Russell does. I thought that the opportunity to have both those guys in the same offense, it gives us a chance — if it works out, and we’ve got a long way to go — if it works out, to maintain continuity with one of the backups.”

If Carroll is willing to praise Boykin so early in the process, there is a good chance he could end up making the team’s final roster.

With fellow undrafted free agents Jake Heaps of Kansas and Vernon Adams of Oregon as the only competition Boykin faces for a backup quarterback role, the road has been paved for Boykin to prove he belongs.
