President Obama praises former Rutgers DT Eric LeGrand

On Sunday afternoon, President Barack Obama gave his commencement address at Rutgers University. During this time, he was also able to meet with Eric LeGrand, a former star player of the Scarlet Knights football team.

This was Obama’s very first time to meeting LeGrand.

Per MyCentralJersey.com, Obama told the former footballer, “I know exactly who you are and your story is very inspiring — you have inspired so many people that you will never know. Just keep up the good work.”

LeGrand responded to the president’s heartfelt statement, stating “I’m never at a loss for words, but I was at a loss for words there.”

Back in 2010, LeGrand was paralyzed during a game. Doctors told him that he would absolutely never walk again, and that it was quite likely that he would need a ventilator for his entire life.

LeGrand has since defied the odds, and breathes on his own with no help from a ventilator. Since his injury, LeGrand has become a huge backer of spinal cord research and serves as an inspiration to many who have suffered paralysis.

It is great to see LeGrand recognized and honored by the most powerful man in the free world.
