Rory McIlroy ties Players Championship record with 29 on back nine

Shane Lowry thought he would be sitting pretty with his record 29 on the back nine at the Players Championship earlier this week. However, top golfer Rory McIlroy had something to say about that on Friday when he did the exact same thing.

McIlroy was pretty far down the leaderboard heading into the second day of the tournament Friday after shooting a disappointing even par on Thursday. However, he has worked his way back into a three-way tie for sixth place after shooting -8 on the day.

His great day came after shooting a seven-under-par 29 on the back nine, tying Lowry’s record set just a day before. His back nine was capped off by two pars on the last two holes and a 53-foot par putt for an Eagle on the 16th.

To put things into perspective, the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Lake Ponte Vedra, Florida, has been played since 1985 and not once was there a 29 on the back nine. There have been two in the first two days of this year’s event.

Rory McIlroy finished with a 64 for his second round day. This score was just one stroke shy of the course record, which Colt Knost actually achieved on Friday with his ten birdie day.

There are still two more days of this tournament and it looks like it should be a petty fun one through Sunday.
