San Diego Chargers claim Zach Mettenberger

It didn’t take former Tennessee Titans quarterback Zach Mettenberger long to find a new home after being released by the team on Monday. Just one day later, the San Diego Chargers announced they have signed the former LSU product.

To make room for Mettenberger, the Chargers released backup quarterback Bryn Renner.

The move makes a lot of sense for both parties.

Current San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt is Mettenberger’s former head coach in Tennessee. Whisenhunt was confident enough in Mettenberger to draft him out of LSU, so the familiarity with the offense should help the quarterback find his groove with the team sooner rather than later.

On top of that, new Chargers tight ends coach John McNulty was Mettenberger’s quarterbacks coach with the Titans.

During his rookie season, Mettenberger through for 1,412 yards and eight touchdowns while starting seven games. Ultimately, the Mettenberger lost his starting job when the Titans drafted Marcus Mariota No. 2 overall.

Now, Mettenberger gets a fresh start around those who believed in him to begin with. This could work wonders for the youngster’s career.
