St. Joe’s upsets VCU 87-74 to win A-10 Tournament

St. Joseph’s maintained its momentum pace to upset Atlantic 10 staple Virginia Commonwealth in the A-10 Tournament Final and punch a ticket to the coming week’s NCAA Tournament.

DeAndre Bembry led the Hawks with 30 points while Isaiah Miles chipped in 26 points and 12 rebounds in a game where St. Joe’s was nearly unstoppable. St. Joseph’s picked and popped its way to shooting an eye-popping 65 percent from the field and committed just seven turnovers, while VCU’s havoc game never got rolling.

The Rams shot just 41 percent from the field and simply couldn’t keep up with a Hawks team that defeated Dayton in the A-10 Semifinal yesterday and had all of the momentum at its back. As a result, St. Joe’s will head to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2014 and for the seventh time under longtime coach Phil Martelli.

It may not seem so now, but St. Joe’s is loaded with talent and could very well make a significant run in the big dance. Be sure to stay tuned to Campus Sports for any further updates from the Hawks’ path to the NCAA Tournament!
