Sting kicks off WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2016

The iconic Sting is the first member of the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2016, per a statement on WWE.com.

Known for his time in WCW, which WWE bought in 2001, Sting (real name Steve Borden) won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship six times and became an icon, first for his surfer-like persona before moving to a darker character inspired by the film The Crow.

Sting also turned a lot of heads following WWE’s acquisition of WCW, opting to instead sign with lesser-known promotion Total Nonstop Action (TNA). There, he won the TNA World Heavyweight Championship four times and finally made his WWE debut at the Survivor Series pay-per-view in 2014 at age 55, having a short showdown with Triple H before helping Team Cena seal the victory over Team Authority.

That appearance set the groundwork for Sting’s Wrestlemania debut at Wrestlemania 31 in San Francisco, in which he fought a no holds barred match with Triple H and lost, despite interference from former WCW stable the NWO, featuring Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall. Sting would later feud with then WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins and fight him for the title at Night of Champions back in September, only to lose the match and suffer a potentially career-threatening neck injury during the bout.

Just the same, Sting’s accomplishments speak for themselves and though the timing of this suggests that his wrestling career is indeed over, WWE has taught us to always expect the unexpected.
