Stony Brook rallies to win America East Conference

Stony Brook came back from as many as 15 points down to win the America East Conference (AEC) Tournament Final against Vermont, 80-74. Senior Jameel Warney led the Seawolves with 43 points and 10 rebounds, plus four blocks, as he made 18 of 22 attempts.

Stony Brook will now head to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in team history after 11 years under head coach Steve Pikiell. The Seawolves have won four AEC regular season championships under Pikiell’s watch, but never managed to come through in the championship game when it mattered most.

This year was different. Vermont lost top players to foul trouble in the second half, and Warney was just unstoppable. The Catamounts committed 26 fouls to go with an unacceptable 17 turnovers, thus sealing their fate. Long story short, they beat themselves and have nobody else to blame.

And this is a great story for Stony Brook, as the Seawolves have a ton of momentum heading into next week’s tournament. They’ll have a low seeding for sure, but cannot be counted out as a potential Cinderella after today’s rally.
