Tubby Smith hired as new HC at Memphis

The Memphis Tigers lost Josh Pastner to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, but they wasted little time finding his replacement. Wichita State head coach Gregg Marshall was a big candidate for the job, but the Tigers ultimately settled on Texas Tech head coach Tubby Smith.

The news was reported Thursday morning, first broken by CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish. This is a huge pickup for the Tigers as Smith should help bring them back to prominence in the AAC.

Tubby Smith is one of the most legendary coaches in all of college basketball with a career that stretches across 25 years and with five different schools. He spent majority of his career with the Kentucky Wildcats, taking them to the NCAA Tournament in all ten of his seasons and a national championship in his first season in 1998.

He has amassed an overall record of 557-276, making him one of the winningest active coaches in the country today. He replaces Pastner, who spent seven seasons with the Tigers, and missed the NCAA Tournament the last two seasons.
