UNC-Wilmington knocks off Hofstra in OT to win CAA Tournament

UNC-Wilmington needed overtime, but came away with the 80-73 victory to win this year’s Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament. Senior Craig Ponder led the Seahawks with 21 points, while Denzel Ingram and Chris Flemmings chipped in 17 and 19 apiece in a hard-fought victory that was achieved despite 18 points and 23 rebounds from Hofstra center Rokas Gustys.

The game itself was very back-and-forth, with UNCW having some key players in foul trouble come overtime, but fate had other ideas. Going into overtime 68-68, timely baskets by the Seahawks and missed free throws by the Pride plus a game-icing three by Ingram led to the final outcome. As a result, UNCW won its fifth ever CAA title and first under coach and former Louisville assistant Kevin Keatts.

The Seahawks are now headed to their first NCAA Tournament since 2006 and with all of the parity that exists this year, nobody can be counted out as one that can make a deep tournament run.
