When the Baylor Bears and Texas Tech Red Raiders face off this weekend, it’s a safe bet that the game is going to be a shootout. However, the over/under of the game is incredibly high at 90.5, as ESPN Chalk’s David Payne Purdum reported on Twitter.
It’s sure to be a high-scoring game, but THAT high? Well, it certainly isn’t unrealistic. Baylor coach Art Briles runs a spread offense that allows for quarterback Seth Russell to get creative in the pocket quickly, while Texas Tech’s Kliff Kingsbury runs an Air Raid offense that is extremely pass heavy.
But there is something else to consider here. Baylor ranks 15th in total defense, while Texas Tech ranks 125th. Granted, Red Raiders quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been an absolute stud on offense this season, throwing for 1,421 yards and 11 touchdowns thus far, but he has yet to face a defensive player in the same league as Baylor’s 6-foot-9, 280 pound defensive end Shawn Oakman, who has 11 tackles and two sacks on the year.
Simply put, if Baylor’s defense is fully engaged and can get its pass rush going against Mahomes, this game could easily turn into a blowout on the Bears’ end.
At that point, those who bet the over in this game could soon be banging their heads against the wall.
Kickoff between Baylor and Texas Tech is slated for 3:30 p.m. on ABC.
