It appears as though the UFC is targeting a stadium show for a heavyweight championship rematch between current champion Fabricio Werdum and former title holder Cain Velasquez.
According to Werdum, who spoke with MMAFighting.com, the UFC is targeting a pay-per-view event at Arena da Baixada stadium in Curitiba which holds 42,000 fans.
The event would take place in March.
“It’s not 100 percent yet, but the fight will happen in March,” Werdum told MMAFighting.com. “I wanted it to take place in Porto Alegre, but Gremio’s soccer stadium doesn’t have a roof. There’s a soccer stadium in Curitiba with a retractable roof, so it’s probably going to be there. This fight will happen in a soccer stadium because a lot of people are waiting for this.”
Werdum won the title from Velasquez via submission at UFC 188 in Mexico City earlier this year.
From the beginning, Werdum was looking sharp and the former champ began to fade as the fight went on. It was the first time that conditioning was an issue for Velasquez.
Now, rather than fighting in enemy territory, Werdum will have the support of the hometown crowd.
It will be interesting to see whether Velasquez can play the spoiler role this time around to win back his title.
