Class of 2016 five-star forward Wenyen Gabriel, out of Massachusetts’ Wilbraham & Monson Academy, near Springfield, has committed to the Kentucky Wildcats over the Duke Blue Devils. Matt Norlander of CBS Sports reported Gabriel’s decision, and Gabriel also posted an announcement on his personal Twitter page.

It’s quite the accomplishment for Gabriel, who didn’t have a single offer from a Division I school in 2014. Since then, he has improved his game to the point where, over the course of a week in July, he was practically swimming in offers. On top of Kentucky, he was weighing offers from Duke, Maryland, Providence and UConn.
He is now poised to do incredibly well under coach John Calipari in Lexington. Gabriel has a long and lean build at 6-foot-9, 195 pounds and is still growing. His jump shot is strong and can play great interior defense as well. He’s raw, but should refine his game quickly under Coach Cal along with fellow five-star prospect and Class of 2016 recruit Sascha Killyea-Jones.
Needless to say, it’s looking like the Wildcats will once again be a team that contends for a championship in the 2016-17 season.
