GoFundMe for hero of Oregon shooting reaches over $600,000

The deadly shooting at a college campus in Oregon Friday has put student Chris Mintz in the hospital with life-altering injuries.

But the Army vet–who was shot seven times while trying to save his classmates–is getting a boost from well-wishers that reminds us that the human race isn’t completely heartless.

The Daily Mail reports that a GoFundMe account to help Mintz pay his medical bills and take care of his son while out of work reached over $600,000 within the first 16 hours that it was up online.

The fundraising effort was set up by Mintz’s cousin with a goal of $10,000. Contributions from some 19,000 people pushed the figure well over that goal.

Being the incredible human being he is, Mintz chose to make his first Facebook post since the incident about the others affected by the shooting, writing:

“Hope the others injured and their families are doing well, goodnight for me.”
