Florida Gators linebacker Antonio Morrison has been named the National Defensive Player of the Week following a strong performance in his team’s 38-10 win over Ole Miss yesterday. Thomas Goldkamp of 247 Sports reported the development.
A senior from the Chicago area, Morrison and Florida’s defense were borderline invincible last night. Morrison himself had 13 tackles, plus half a sack and 3.5 tackles for a loss. Considering how he injured his knee badly in last season’s Birmingham Bowl, the fact that he is back and performing at such a high level is astounding.
Morrison is currently second on the Gators with 37 tackles, just one behind teammate Jarrad Davis, and has posted 215 tackles (12 for a loss), three sacks, two forced fumbles (one recovery) and even an interception since joining the Gators in 2012.
Needless to say, Morrison and his teammates will likely soon enjoy a nice jump in the rankings and have plenty of momentum heading into next weekend, when they visit Columbia to take on the Missouri Tigers.
